James Bruce was born in Fife, Scotland in 1889, the eldest of four sons and two daughters of James Bruce and Helen nee Durie. At the age of 21 he migrated to Australia and a year later his two brothers Robert Durie Bruce and John Durie Bruce followed him to Queensland. They worked for the Queeensland Railway Department. The fourth brother, William Bruce, enlisted in one of the Scottish regiments and also went to France in WWI.
