"DEATH FROM MYSTERY DISEASE
After a two years' fight by doctors to keep him alive. Harold Fieldsend, 50, engineer, died in Sydney Hospital on Sunday from a mystery disease known as aplastic anaemia. The disease prevents the normal restoration of blood, and no cure has yet been found for it. Five other persons in Sydney are at present suffering from the disease. Fieldsend was given 150 blood transfusions — more than 15 gallons of blood. Last week he suffered an internal haemorrhage, but even daily transfusions could not keep him, alive." - from the Singleton Argus 17 Feb 1943 (nla.gov.au)
