Another Bendigonian who is missing is Private David James Buchanan, the well known cab proprietor, who left with the third reinforcements. He is 34 years of age, and a widower, with two young children. For six or seven years Private Buchanan was a member of the old 8th A.I.R. Ho is a son of Mr. John Buchanan, formerly of View-street. It is understood that the missing man is the only Bendigo cab proprietor who has volunteered up to the present.

David James Buchanan was born in or around 1882 to Elizabeth Neale (Veale?)Buchanan and John Buchanan, in Bendigo, Victoria. He had two brothers, Holt Irwin and Joseph James and a sister, Elina.
He was a mason who enlisted as a widower with two children. His married his wife, Lillian Esther (Cook) in 1906. She died early and was buried at Bendigo on 2 August 1910, leaving him with two children, inlcuding Elizabeth Lilliam Adelia (Buchanan) Newman (1908-1998)and David Adam Buchanan (1990-1976) Another child, Leslie Buchanan, was born and died in 1910.
James' next of kin was listed on his enlistment form as Lena Buchanan, of Forest Street, Bendigo, Victoria. Interestingly, no age was given on this document.

RECRUITING CAMPAIGN. BENDIGO DEPOT
RETURNED SOLDIER RE-ENLISTS
David James Buchanan, cab proprietor, of 204 Forest-Street,Bendigo, was passed at the Bendigo recruiting depot yesterday for active service. He is a returned soldier, who has seen soon active service in Gallipoli, in Cape Helles, and other places. He served in the A.I.F, for 461 days, of which 300 days were served abroad. As a result of the pictures and appeals at the Princess's Tbeatre on Wednesday night four men offered and were examinedd, but only Buchanan passed, the other three beinging unable to pas the doctor.

David died at age 42 on 13 April 1924 and is buried in Bendigo.
