Douglas MacIntyre WALKER, service number 24549
On 5th February, 1951 enlisted for six years in the Australian Regular Army, Sydney.
Undertook recruitment training for 12 weeks at Ingleburn, NSW.
Posted to Royal Australian Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, Central Command Workshops, Moorebank, NSW awaiting trade training course.
However, in December 1951, transferred from RAEME to Infantry and joined the
1 Royal Australian Regiment, Ingleburn (7 Platoon, C Company, 1 RAR)
The Army was building up strength and training to provide a second Australian Battalion in KOREA.
Embarked Sydney on the British Army Troop Transport "Devonshire" 3rd March 1952. Disembarked Kure, Japan about 11 March 1952 to be camped at an old Japanese naval arsenal at Kaitaichi. Four more weeks of battle training and more kit issue. Arrived Pusan, Korea on the SS Empire Longford, a small freighter, 6th April 1952, then boarded a train heading north.
Further battle training then into the front line early June 1952.
Occupied four front line positions between June 1952 and January 1953.
(Promoted to rank of Corporal, section commander, December 1952)
21st March 1953, 1 RAR relieved by 2 RAR, embarked Pusan for return to Australia.
Remained with 1 RAR at Enoggera Barracks, Brisbane.
Transferred to 4 RAR, Ingleburn, NSW September 1953, with the instructional staff. 4 RAR was a training unit providing reinforcements for 2 RAR and 3 RAR, to cover for losses.
November 1954 transferred to Eastern Command Provost Unit, Sydney and undertook the Military Police Training Course at Moorebank.
Australia decided to send an Infantry Battalion and supporting units to MALAYA.
Volunteered for service in Malaya. Arrived Penang on the SS Gorgic on 19th October 1955 to the newly formed 28 Independent Infantry Brigade Group Provost Unit. Served in Penang, Taiping and Ipoh. Returned to Australia December 1957. Posted to Central Command Provost Unit, Keswick Barracks, Adelaide.
Discharged from the Army 14th April 1961.
