Died on this date – 4th February……Archibald McKelvie was born at East Brighton, Victoria on 6th January, 1898.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28th May, 1918 as a 20 year old, Single, Market Gardener from Clarinda, Victoria.
The State Recruiting Committee of Victoria sent a form to Alexander McKelvie,(father of Archibald), dated 31st May, 1918 which stated that Archibald McKelvie had presented himself for enlistment & asking if there was any objection to him enlisting. The form was completed & signed by Alexander & Martha McKelvie stating that they did object – “Not until he is twenty one”.
Private Archibald McKelvie, Service number 61992, was a Camp at Broadmeadows, Victoria before he embarked from Melbourne on SS Zealandic on 5th October, 1918 with 13th (Victorian) Reinforcements. He had been admitted to Ship’s Hospital with Influenza on 27th November, 1918 while at sea & was admitted to Military Hospital at Chatham on arrival in England on 5th December, 1918.
He was discharged from Hospital on 12th December, 1918 & granted leave. He reported to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 13th December, 1918.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
On 28th January, 1919 Private McKelvie was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire with Broncho Pneumonia, dangerously ill.
Private Archibald McKelvie died at 10 a.m. on 4th February, 1919 at the 1st Australian General Hospital, Sutton Veny of Broncho Pneumonia.
He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves & 2 Australian WW1 Nurses are laid to rest.
