Samuel's parents were Matthew Delaney and Maria Lorenzo. He enlisted 18 May 1916 at Brisbane. Samuel is listed on the electoral rolls as living at Mt Pleasant and Dayboro prior to the war. He was discharged on 7 November 1918. In 1925 Samuel is living at the Railway Hotel in North Bundaberg, his occupation is a labourer. The Brisbane Courier, reported Samuel's death, Thursday 21 April 1927, and lists Samuel as being employed as a punt-man for the Gravel, Sand and Metal Supply Ltd, South Brisbane.
About 6.30 Wednesday the body of & man which later was identified as that of Samuel Delaney was found in the river near Victoria Bridge by Constables Moller and Young, of the Water Police.
Delaney who was employed as a
puntman by the Sand, Gravel, and Cement Co. of Stanley Street South Brisbane, resided on a punt called Morgan, which was moored in the river near the company's premises.
He was first missed on Wednesday morning when other employees commenced work. It is believed that he fell into the river when trying to board the punt on the previous night.
