Born in Greenbushes WA in 1914, Ernie was the second of seven children of  David Josiah Stinton (b1889 in Bunbury WA) and Constance Stroud (b1895 in Capel, WA). David (aka Josiah; a Mill Hand at Nangs Brook) and Constance married in 1912 in Blackwood, WA. Josiah was closely associated with early group settlement activities, and in 1923 carted timber to the group settlements - Constance, who sometimes accompanied him on the horse and dray had witnessed the hardhsips faced by the group settlers and 'had seen wives, after inspecting their virgin land, just sit down under a tree and cry' (Busselton Margaret River Times; 1981). Josiah and Constance lived in Bridgetown WA where Josiah worked as a Tin Miner, and at Lilyvale where he was a Farmer. Josiah and Constance retired to Busseltown.

Ernie was working as a Truck Driver in Busselton in November 1939 when he enlisted in the Australian Army (Private; Service No:WX618). He served in the Middle East, Greece and New Guinea with 2nd/11th Infantry Battalion, 2nd/6th Infantry Battalion and 6th Division Signals. Ernie was hospitalised with Rubella in December 1939. pneumonia in 1944 and in June 1945 was hosptalised in New Guinea (104 Casualty Clearing Station) with Scrub Typhus and Malaria. Ernie died on 26 June 1945 and was initially 'buried in the field' and in January 1946 was reburied in Wewak War Cemetery.
