61 years ago today, on the 19th June 1962, Sapper Peter Bede Gleeson, 6th Australian Broad Gauge Railway Operating Company (Reg No-83), fireman (Hamilton Loco sheds), from Little Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales and 7 Young Street, Carrington, N.S.W. (1952), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. CATHOLIC 1-21. 95.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 13th April 1892 to James P and Norah M Gleeson; husband of Agnes Irene Gleeson nee Ryan (married 1920, West Maitland, N.S.W., died 19.2.1946, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 53, sleeping here), Pete enlisted on the 28th December 1916 with the Railway Unit Reinforcements at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on the 7th February 1917.
To Paris on leave from 11.2.1918 to 17.2.1918.
To England on leave from 13.7.1918 to 28.7.1918.
To Paris on leave from 19.12.1918 to 30.12.1918.
Admitted to hospital 20.2.1919 (influenza, severe).

Pete returned home on the 11th June 1919, being discharged on the 20th July 1919.

Mr. Gleeson’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates, Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor, Carrington Football Club Roll of Honor, Hamilton Loco Employees Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Pete’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Younger brother Michael Joseph (Mick, born 1.12.1895, Greta, New South Wales, wharf labourer from Little Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales, enlisted 6.3.1916, 34th Battalion, Reg No-2313, wounded in action - 31.8.1918, GSW left forearm, RTA invalided 20.2.1919, died 5.12.1971, age 75, Plaque in Queensland Garden of Remembrance, officially commemorated also served 1st A.I.F.
