Biography

Son of Frederick William BERRY and Eliza nee PARISH

Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Frank Victor Berry was born in Adelaide on the 8th of November 1890. His parents were Mr. Frederick William Berry and Mrs. Eliza Jane Berry nee Parish. Frank was the fourth of five brothers, Harold, Herbert, Roy, and Reginald; they lived in East Adelaide. He identified as a Methodist on his enlistment form. He was 5'4" and weighed 138 lbs. Frank had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. He worked as a warehouseman before the war.

Frank enlisted at Keswick Barracks, in Adelaide, on the 2nd of August 1915. He was given the rank of Corporal. He departed for France on board HMAT A19 Afric on the 9th of June 1916. Due to his civilian experience in warehousing and logistics, Frank served on the 3rd Divisional Train. The divisional trains transported ammunition, food, water, and equipment supplies. The tasks of the trains and motorised columns varied. The basic tasks of train companies were to carry equipment and resupply food and water for the headquarters and units of the division.

From his service records we can deduce that he spent most of the war in France with the 3rd DivisionalTtrain, transporting supplies to the Western Front. Frank was given 8 days in Paris and 16 days in England during his service. On the 1st of June 1918 Frank was temporarily promoted to the rank of Sargent. Two months later, on the 1st of August he was permanently promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Frank returned home 11th of May 1919

Now at age 27, Frank Victor Berry disembarked in Adelaide 23rd June 1919. He was discharged 8th August 1919. On the 6th of March 1920, Frank married Annie Irene Hindmarsh. Together they had 3 children Max, Joan, and Margaret.

Unfortunately, Frank died on the 19th of May 1929, at the age of only 38. He is buried at the North Road Cemetery, in Nailsworth, South Australia.
