Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Thomas James CAHILL, (Service Number 4033) was born in Newtown in 1892, joined the NSWGR as an apprentice boilermaker at Eveleigh in 1907. On completion of his apprenticeship in 1913, he was discharged, as was the practice in those days, but re-engaged within the month as a tradesman boilermaker, on more than double his former daily wage. He was released from duty to join the AIF in March 1915 at Liverpool.
Embarked in May 1915 from Sydney, and sent to Gallipoli in September, he was fined one day’s pay for disobeying the order of an NCO there in October. In December he was evacuated, sick, to hospital in Egypt, suffering ‘debility’, but in January 1916 discharged to base, and re-joined his unit in Egypt in March. In June 1916 he was sent with his comrades to France. He enjoyed a fortnight’s leave in the UK at the end of September and re-joined his unit in October 1917. In action on 17 February 1918, he suffered a bullet wound in the head, from which he died at a casualty clearing station the same day.
