Staff Nurse Eila Isabel Calvert enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service on 1 October 1915 and was attached to 1 Australian General Hospital when she embarked from Melbourne on 12 November 1915 on board HMAT Orsova A67. Staff Nurse Calvert served with No1 Stationary Hospital in Egypt (Suez Canal, Ismailia) and embarked from Alexandria for England on 25 August 1916. Satff Nurse Calvert served at the New Zealand Hospital at Brokenhurst and embarked for Australia on 19 August 1917 on board NZ Pakeha. She was Discharged on 3 March 1918.
Born in Sandhurst in Bendigo Victoria in 1883, Eila was the eldest of five children of James Calvert (b1849 in Angus, Scotland) and Florence Agnes Rae (b1864 in Colac, Victoria). James emigrated with his parents and siblings in 1853, arriving at Port Phillip Bay, Victoria on board the Wacousta. James (an Agent) and Florence married in 1883 in Bendigo, Victoria.
Eila worked at Melbourne Children's Hospital as a Nurse before enlisting in WWI. In 1918 she married Dr Hugh Dynnerne Lathrop Murray (b1869 in Ararat, Victoria). Hugh - a Widower - was a medical practitioner and had served as a Captain in WWI. Eila and Hugh settled in Melbourne, Victoria and following Hugh's death in 1929, Eila remained in Melbourne, although she made several voyages to Canada and the UK. Eila died in 1961.
