Corporal Douglas Edward McEwen (Service No:VX145459) initially enlisted in the ACMF as a Private attached to 13 Light Horse Regiment on 15 December 1941 and was appointed Farrier. He was 'in the field' at Barrow Creek in the NT on 21 January 1944 when he enlisted in the AIF and served with NT Force Details Depot as a Corporal (Butcher) until Discharge on 6 March 1946.
Born in 1916 in Sale Vctoria, Douglas was the second of six children of Albert Edward McEwen (b1890 in Palmerston, New Zealand) and Bertha Chaplin Elston (b1895 in Sale, Victoria). Albert (a Blacksmith) and Bertha marrried in 1914 in Sale, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and Albert was a Blacksmith and Butcher.
Douglas worked as a Butcher in Sale before enlisting in the Army, and in 1941 married Ida Winifred Pocknall (b1918 in Stratford, Victoria). Douglas and Ida settled in Sale where Douglas was a Butcher until the mid 1970s when he worked as a Watchman. Douglas died in 1991 and Ida in 2013.
