Signallers are used to communicate between bases- like the old fashion way for a walkie talkie. The division signal companies belonged to the Royal Australian Engineers during World War 1. A ex signaller named Ernest Raymond Appleby was one of them because he was a mechanic/electrical engineer. Ernest was born in December of 1893. His home town was Keswick, close to the CBD of Adelaide. His Guardian was his mum was Amanda Mary Appleby. Ernest was aged 22 and 7 months at time of enlistment, his height was5 feet/4 inches, his weight 136 ibs, his chest measurement 37.5 inches, his eye colour brown and his hair brunette. He belonged to the Church of England. After the doctor cleared Ernest he enlisted in the 5/48 Battalion. Ernest Enlisted at Unley and he embarked from Adelaide to Plymouth and disembarked on the 11th October 1916. The ship that Ernest embarked on was called HMAT Anchises A68. Ernest returned to Australia 24 July 1919 and he re-enlisted for World War 2 from 1939 to 1948. Ernest Married Dorothy Irene Appleby they both Rest in Peace together in Centennial Park in plot NS21. Ernest was Aged 76 when he passed away. Ernest was in the 79th inventory and the 4th division signal company.
