Corporal Thomas Sutherland Taylor (Service No:VX48517) enlisted in the Army as a Private on 26 July 1942 and embarked for the Middle East from Sydney on 8 April 1941 with 2/23rd Training Battalion. Private Taylor served with 1 Australian Corps in the Middle East and embarked for the RTA on 17 March 1942 on board SS Strathallan. Promoted to Corporal on 24 August 1944, he served in New Guinea (10 October 1944 - 30 December 1945) with 1 Australian Corps and 20 Field Coy. Corporal Taylor was attached to HQ First Australian Army at Discharge on 16 January 1946.

Born in 1917 in Terang Victoria, Tom was the elder son of Thomas (Tom Snr) Emanuel Stanley Taylor (b1891 in Blackwood, Victoria) and Isabelle (Belle) Sutherland (b1891 at Numurkah nr Shepparton, Victoria). Tom Snr (a Dairy Farmer) and Belle married in 1916 and settled in Terang where they raised their family and Tom Snr was a Farmer.

Tom worked on the family farm in Terang as a Farm Hand and was a keen long distance bike rider - winning many trophies. Tom enlisted in the Army in 1940 and was in Melbourne that year when he married Noreen (Norrie) Hefferman (b1907 in Noorat, Victoria) - Norrie lived in Terang where her father was a Dairy Farmer. Following his Discharge in 1946, Tom and Norrie settled in Terang where Tom was a Farm Labourer and Foreman, and assisted on the family farm when his father was unable to do the milking. Norrie died in 1978 and Tom in 1980.
