"THE LATE PRIVATE J. F. BAYES.
Mr. G. F. Bayes, of Glanton-street, West Hindmarsh, has received word from the Military Department that his nephew, Private J. F. Bayes, was killed at the front on July 17. Private Bayes, who was the eldest son of the late W. and M. Bayes, left South Australia on February 7, 1916. He had resided in the Bowden district all his life, and by his quiet, unobtrusive, and lovable disposition had endeared himself to a large circle of friends, who will deeply regret his loss. Private Bayes had only reached the age of 20 in June last. No news has yet been received of the circumstances under which he met his death." - from the Adelaide Chronicle 26 Aug 1916 (nla.gov.au)
**James Bayes was NOT Killed in Action - Pte. Bayes was taken Prisoner by the Germans on 20 Jul 1916 at Leventie, France after suffering a wounded leg during the "unsuccessful attack of the Australian Fifth Division on the enemy lines near Fleurbaix."
On 02 Nov 1918, BAYES and 1057 Pte. Edward John Amy (/explore/people/216767) escaped, and together made their way back to England.
"AUSTRLIANS ESCAPE. FROM HUNLAND. London, Nov. 20.
Privates E. J. Amy (Port Melbourne, 29th Battalion), J. F. Bayes (Adelaide, 32nd Battalion), D. Ferry (Sydney, 25th Battalion), and A. J. Whitington, (Western Australia, 16th Battalion) escaped into Holland, and arrived in Hull. Captain N. G.
