Robert, born in 1905 in Besselsleigh, Berkshire in England, was the eldest of three children of William Andrew Barguss (born 1875 in Headington, Oxfordshire) and Sarah Groome (born 1879 in Monmouthshire). William had been a Stable Boy and Groom before marrying Sarah in 1904 in Kidlington in Oxfordshire, and in WWI William served in the RAF.

Robert grew up in Berkshire, where his parents were Grocers and Furniture Dealers, and Robert was a Bootmaker before he immigrated to Melbourne, Vicvtoria, Australia in 1925.

Robert started work in Australia as a Farm Worker in Murchison East, Echuca, Victoria and by 1933 when he married Hellena May Goodwill (born 1903 in Warragul, Victoria) he was a Farmer at Koonwarra in Leongatha, Gippsland, Victoria. Robert enlisted in the ACMF in 1939, and in May 1941 enlisted in the Australian Army where he served as a Private (Service No: VX53554) with 2/13 General Hospital Australian Medical Corps. He was captured by the Japanese and imprisoned in Burma where he died on 12 January 1944. Hellena died in Collongwood, Victoria in 1952
