Son of David Vance and Catherine Vance of 'Alloa', Botany Road, Waterloo, NSW.
Brother of Archibald John Vance who was killed in action at Messines, Belgium on 10 June 1917 while serving with the 36th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Panel 26 of the Menin Gate, Ypres.
Commenced return to Australia on 31 May 1917 disembarking on 5 July 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel overland to Sydney
