"...3779 Private John Rolston Beattie, shop assistant of Cowra, NSW. He initially enlisted on 13 April 1915, but was discharged a week later at family request. Pte Beattie then re-enlisted on 14 September 1915 and together with his younger brother, Pte Arnold Locke Beattie, embarked on HMAT Runic on 20 January 1916. Both brothers were transferred to the 20th Battalion on 1 June 1916. Pte John Beattie was killed in action at Pozieres on 3 August 1916, aged 23 years. His brother, Pte Arnold Beattie, died of wounds five days later on 8 August 1916." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
