PRIVATE WALTER ALLAN McINNES 4251

45th Infantry & 4th MG Battalions AIF

Walter McInnes was born at Upper Tarlo in NSW in 1893 and joined the AIF in July 1915, training at the Holdsworthy Camp in Sydney, before embarking for the Middle East on HMAT Aeneas on the 20th December 1915 as a reinforcement for the 13th Battalion.

In March 1916, Walter was re-allocated to the 45th Battalion and landed in France in June.  He took part in the Battle of Pozieres, and served in the lines at Ypres before being evacuated medically to England in December 1916, where he remained on medical grounds until 1918.

Like many soldiers he was not a saint, being convicted for being absent without leave in late 1917, and later was convicted by Court Martial for “Dealing in Government Clothing”. He received 28 days in cells, four of which were commuted for good behaviour.

Walter joined the 4th MG Battalion in July 1918, taking part in the Battles of Amiens and the Hindenburg Line, returning home in July 1919.

Walter Allan McInnes died at the Concord Repatriation Hospital Sydney on the 16th of January 1966 aged 73.
