Robert was the youngest of eight children of Percival (Percy) Leonard Dyson (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Theodocia Hannah Wallis (b1880 in Perth, WA). Percy (a Furniture Dealer) and Theodocia married in 1901 in Perth WA where they settled and raised their family. Percy worked as a Furniture Dealer and Broker, Bookmaker and Clerk.

Robert was a Motor Mechanic/Fitter in Perth WA when he enlisted in the ACMF in January 1940 (Signaller; Service No:W37127) and Discharged to enlist in the AIF in October 1941 (Western Command Signals and Signals 11 Australian Division). He served in New Guinea (1942 - 1944) where he was accidentally injured in October 1943 when a cartridge shell exploded in a pile of burning leaves. Robert was Discharged in August 1944.

Returning to Perth WA, Robert was working as a Motor Mechanic in 1949 when he married Kathleen Dulcie Hilton (b1926 in Perth WA) - Kathleen was working as a Typist. The couple settled in Perth, where Robert worked as a Mechanic and Book Maker before becoming a Garage Proprietor in Como, South Perth. He and Kathleen moved to Warnbro in Rockingham WA in the early 1970s, and by 1980 were living in Safety Bay - where Robert stated his occupation was 'Gardener'.
