Lance Corporal Sydney Riddler (Service No:VX28 March 1940) applied for Enlistment in the Special Force on 19 September 1939 before enlisting in the AIF on 28 March 1940. Lance Corporal Riddler served with HQ Australian Army Corps in Palestine (9 September 1940 - 21 July 1941) and was attached to Australian Army Corps HQ Guard Battalion at Discharge on 12 November 1941 (medically unfit).
Sid was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1907, youngest of five children of John Alexander Riddler (b1875 in Newcastle, Northumberland) and first wife Margaret Campbell (b1873 in Aberdeen, Scotland). John (a Building Mason) and Margaret (a Factory Worker) married in 1896 in Aberdeen. They lived in Aberdeen and Edinburgh where they raised their family and John worked as a Building Mason. In 1906 John immigrated to the USA, where he later remarried. Margaret died in 1919. Eldest son - Private James Riddler (Regimental No:4015; 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders) was KiA in France in 1915.
Sid (aged 16 years) was a Labourer when he immigrated with older brother Alex (aged 18 years) in 1925, arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Euripides. Sid worked as a Rigger and Steeplejack in Melbourne where, in 1935, he married Iris Winifred Spark (b1905 in Ballarat, Victoria) - Iris was working in Melbourne as a Saleswoman. Sid and Iris settled in Melbourne where they raised their family, and following his Discharge, Sid worked as an Assistant, Clothing Manufacturer and Baker. In 1967 Sid and Iris retired to Welshman's Reef via Castlemaine, Victoria where Sid died in 1985. Iris died in 2008.
