Leslie Allen enlisted in November 1915, as a 22 year old farm labourer from Taranna Tasmania and was sent overseas as part of the 12th Battalion. He was posted to the 52nd Battalion in Egypt as part of the splitting up the AIF during the early part of 1916. He was killed in action during the last AIF attack on Mouquet Farm on the night of 3rd September 1916. His body was buried on the battlefield and was reinterred after the war into the Serre Road Cemetery No 1 (Plot VII, Row H, Grave 12), at Beaumont-Hamel, France.
The following notice appeared in the Hobart Mercury October 1916.
“Allen-Leslie, dearly loved and third oldest son of Egbert and Lucy Allen, Taranna, aged 23 years. He nobly did his duty, and gave his life for his King and Country.”
A year later, on the the anniversary of his death in the Hobart Mercury September 1917.
“Allen -In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Leslie, who was killed in action between 3rd and 5th September, 1916, aged 24 years. His King and Country called him,The call was not in vain- On Taranna's Roll of Honour, You will find our hero's name. Inserted by his fond parents, brothers, and sisters.”
