Robert Hall Lawrie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1884. He moved to Australia and lived with his uncle who was also named Robert Hall in Alberton, South Australia.
Robert Hall enlisted to go to war on the 29th of September, 1914 when he was 29 years old and 9 months. He enlisted at Morphettville, South Australia. At the time of enlistment, Lawrie was 5 foot 11, 68.5 kg, single and a Presbyterian. Lawrie then embarked from Port Melbourne on the HMAT Ceramic A40 on the 22nd December, 1914 with the 16th Battalion.
While Robert Hall Lawrie was at war he joined the Mediterranean Expeditionary Forces at Gallipoli, Peninsula. On the 14th August, 1915 Robert was promoted to a signaller in the 16th battalion. Two days after becoming a signaller he embarked on the HS Newralia because he was sick with Fibrositis. He went to the No.1 Australian General Hospital but then was transferred to the No.3 Auxillary Hospital. On the 3rd September, 1915 he was sent to the Convalescent Depot, Helouan and was then given light duty because he was unwell. He was then admitted to hospital with varicose veins on the 15th October, 1915. About a month later he went back to war in Egypt and re-joined the 16th Unit.
After a period of time with the 4th Cyclist Corps - transferred on the 15th May, 1916 - Lawrie was sent to join the 11th Battalion in France. He embarked for France on the HMT Briton and reallocated the regiment number 1296A.
Then on the 27th January, 1917 Lawrie was admitted to hospital with conjunctivitis.
On the 24th September, 1918 Lawrie returned to Australia on board the Kasir-A-Hind and was discharged in 1919. Lawrie spent 4 years and 116 days with the AIF, 3 years and 337 days of that overseas.
Lawrie was awareded the 1914-15 Star Medal, a British War medal and the Victory medal.
Following his service with the AIF, Lawrie took up employment with H.M. Customs.
Robert Hall Lawrie died at 74 years of age and was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery in South Australia.
