Corporal John Roden Sutherland (Service No:WX31749) initially served in the ACMF (Sapper; Service No:W38560) with 56 Field Park Coy and Camp Staff Bellevue from 22 February 1941 to 13 September 1942 when he Discharged to enlist in the AIF the next day. Corporal Sutherland served with 3 Australian Army Corps and was attached to Western Command Recruit Reception and General Details Depot (Staff) at Discharge on 24 December 1945. Father William served in WWI and brother Allan in WWII.

The youngest of three children, John was born in 1920 in Manjimup WA to William Sutherland (b1881 in Gisborne, Victoria) and Florence Towie (b1891 in Lancashire, England) - Florence immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1906, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Orontes. William (a Timber Hewer) and Florence married in 1913 in Blackwood WA and following William's Discharge from the AIF, settled in Manjimup where they raised their family and William worked as a Timber Hewer and Billiard Marker and Florence was a Shopkeeper.

John was working as a Bank Clerk in Kununoppin WA when he enlisted in the Army. In 1943 in Perth WA he married Gladys Alma Harding (b1921 in Bunbury, WA). Following his Discharge, John and Gladys lived in Kununoppin where John was a Bank Officer, and were in Katanning in 1954. By 1958 John was promoted to Bank Manager and he and Gladys were in Koorda via Toodyay before being transferred in the early 1960s to Katanning, Bruce Rock and Merredin. By 1972 John was a Bank Manager in Perth, and he and Gladys settled in Dianella. Gladys died in 1994 and John in 2000.
