Ernest was the fourth of five children of Arnold Renfry Carthew (b1882 in Running Creek, Ovens, Victoria) and Susannah (Bess ) Mary Ecclestone (b1890 in Boyanup, WA). Arnold (a WAGR Railway Porter) and Bess married in 1911 Boyanup, WA. The couple lived in Boyanup, Yalgoo, Carrabin, Northam, Guildford and Gwalia as Arnold worked with the WAGR as a Porter, Assistant Station Manager and Station Manager. Following his death in 1926, Bess moved to Perth WA with her children, and remarried.

Ernest was a Packer in Perth WA when he enlisted in the Militia in 1936. By 1940 he was a Sergeant and in October 1944 he was a Captain (Service Nos:WX35928/W30085/W6744) attached to 11 Battalion when he was Discharged.

In 1938 Ernest married Dorothy Christina Dodds Stewart (b1920 in Bunbury, WA) and the couple settled in Perth where Ernest was a Packer, Floor Superintendent and Assistant Manager. Dorothy died in 1981 and Ernest in 1988.
