He was the second son of Mr and Mrs John Ballantyne of Kirkurd and Newlands in the Scottish Borders. He was 35. His brother fell whilst serving with British forces-he was Second Lieutenant William Ballantyne of the 1st Bn. Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)-died 13/10/1915.
