Flight Sergeant Roderick Norman Douglas (Service No:439273) served with the AIF prior to enlisting in the RAAF. He enlisted as a Private (Service No:TX409) on 7 November 1939 and served in the Middle East - embarked from Melbourne for Lentara on 22 April 1940 on board HMT Y4 - and in Greece. He was hospitalised at Gaza with Influenza and then Mumps. Sergeant Douglas served with Composite Coy (formerly 19th Infantry Training Brigade), Petrol Coy 6th Division and 23 Australian Depot Cash Office. Sergeant Douglas Discharged on 16 February 1943 and enlisted in Sydney NSW in the RAAF on 9 June 1943. Flight Sergeant Douglas was attached to Advanced Flying and Refresher Unit Denilquin when he Discharged on 30 April 1945.

Born in 1916 in Launceston Tasmania, Roderick was the eldest of four children of Roderick Gordon Douglas (b1885 in Launceston, Tasmania) and Ila Alice Findlay (b1890 in Launceston, Tasmania). Roderick Snr (an Engineer) and Ila married in 1916 in Launceston, Tasmania and lived in Ringarooma, Ulverstone and Launceston where they raised their family and Roderick was an Engineer.

Roderick was a Clerk with the Taxation Office in Hobart, Tasmania and in 1937 married Kathleen May Walters (b1919 in Latrobe, Tasmania). Roderick and Kathleen Divorced in Launceston in 1943 and Roderick remarried in Sale, Victoria in 1945 to Myra Jean Whykes (b1924 in Sale, Victoria). Roderick was an Assessor with the Taxation Office and he and Myra lived in Franklin until Myra's sudden death in 1954. Roderick then worked in Hobart as an Assessor with the Taxation Office. He died in 1976.
