Alfred Thomas Ashenden was born on the 2nd, February, 1885 in Adelaide, South Australia. His nickname was Alf. He was the son of William and Harriet Ashenden. Alf got married to Ellen Maude Keith and had 1 daughter and six sons. They lived on Ashenden road, Aldgate, Adelaide Hills. Ashenden road was named after William Ashenden, who was a pioneer for market gardeners. He was the first person to follow his occupation to the 'other side of Mount Lofty'.

Alfred enlisted for the war on the 26th of February, 1915 in Adelaide. He embarked on HMAT Borda A30 on the 23 June 1915. He fought in France and Gallipoli. He was wounded. Alfred carried metal around in his body for the rest of his life. Alf also suffered from Chronic Bronchitis when he came home. Alf returned from war 29th, June, 1919.

After the war he became a dairyman, milking cows and delivering milk. Alf used to get up at 3am to milk the cows, and do the jobs on the farm. He then re-enlisted for World War II along with five of his sons and Ellen. Alf then died on 1st September, 1959 at the age of 74. Ellen died on the 19th of October 1984 at the age of 96.
