Life Before the War:

George Ernest Atkins was born in Bellerive, Tasmaina and lived in Beach House, Lindisfarne, Tasmania. Atkins attended Bellerive State School and worked as a waiter before he enlisted for the Australian Army. Atkins doesn’t have any previously listed military service as he was only 21 at the time of enlistment. His next of kin was his mother, Mrs E Atkins, who also lived with him in Beach House, Lindsfarne, Tasmania and wasn’t married.

 

Life in Service:

George Ernest Atkins enlisted for the Australian Army on the 30th August 1915 and embarked from Melbourne Victoria on board the HMAT A19 Afric on 5th January 1916. Atkins was ranked as a Private and was in the 12th Battalion. He was killed in action between the 19th and 22nd of August 1916 during the Battle of the Somme, the bloodiest battle during the war which resulted in over 1 million deaths in a matter of 4 months. Atkins was buried at the Australian National Memorial at the Villers-Bretonneux, France.
