World war I started on the 28th of July 1914 and ended on the 11th of November 1918. It was the greatest and biggest war of that time and only a decade after Australia had federated. James Roger Farrell was a soldier in WW1 from Queensland. The ultimate loss was 22,477,500 KIA, WIA or MIA in Allied Powers, and 16,403,000 KIA, WIA or MIA in Central powers. The great war had many losses and ended with a victory for the Allies.
He was born on the 30th of August 1884 near Town of Roma, in Bungeworgorai, Queensland. He was the son of Matthew and Elizabeth Farrell. He attended Toowoomba School in his school years and was after his occupation after school was a groom. John has two brothers and all three enlist in the war, in different units. 57 other soldiers enlisted from the same town.
James enlisted on the 5th of October in 1915, which was the second year of the war, enlisting in a town near Roma in Queensland. He embarked on the 24th of November 1915 part of the 6th Field Artillery Brigade, from Melbourne. He was on the His Majesty's Australian Transports Botanist A59 . He disembarked at Suez on 12/12/15 and proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli). He was then transferred from the 6th Field Artillery Brigade to the 2nd Division Artillery to Ismailia on 12/3/16.
James then embarked on another overseas trip aboard Hired/Horsed Transport Crisp. From Alexandria to Marseilles (17/3/16-24/3/16). They disembarked and proceeded to join British Expeditionary Force at Marseilles. He tore ligaments in his ankle at France (23/4/16), and was admitted to the 7th Field Ambulance. After this he was then transferred to No.8 Casualty Clearing station (23/4/16), he later sprained his ankle and was admitted to 26 General Hospital (25/4/16). From there he was discharged to Base Depot in Etaples (18/5/16)
A few months later was transferred from the 2nd Division Artillery to 22nd Field Artillery Brigade at France (22/7/16). He became sick with pleurisy and was taken to a field ambulance, admitted and transferred to Casualty Clearing Station (3/11/16), then again admitted and transferred to ambulance train at Rouen (4/11/16).
He embarked for England on the Hospital Ship Asturias from Havre, France to England (5/11/16). After arriving at London he was admitted to 3 General Hospital (9/11/16), then he was transferred to 3 Auxiliary Hospital (20/11/16). After his long hospital trip he was discharged and marched in to Dartford (1/12/16-2/12/16). Marched out to Larkhill (6/2/17), then marched in from Wareham (8/2/17).
He was taken on strength from the 22nd Field Artillery Brigade to the 2nd Division Ammunition/Artillery Column. He was injured at and sent to the field ambulance at France (10/11/17). He was taken on strength and transferred from the 2nd Division Ammunition/Artillery Column to the 4th Field Artillery Brigade (13/7/17).
He was involved in many battles across France, and England. Then he was taken on strength from 4th Field Artillery Brigade back to the 11th Battery 2nd Division Ammunition/Artillery Column. He became sick in Rouelles (22/9/17) and joined the Parkhouse Hill Hospital. He was killed in action at Belgium (19/10/17).
He had been to Suez, Ismailia, Alexandria, Marseilles France, Etaples, England, Rouen, Havre, Larkhill, Parkhouse, Folkestone, Rouelles, and Belgium. He was killed and buried at Belgium Battery Corner Cemetery in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. One out of 568 casualties buried there. His brothers were later also killed in action. He died on the 21st of October 1917, aged 33.
