John Matthew Hanley was born in Queensland on 18 May 1875, a son to James Hanly and Margaret Hanly (nee Kelly) and attended the Clifton State School, Clifton, Qld. He enlisted in the Qld Mounted Infantry in 1899 and passed examination for appointment as a non-commissioned officer. He embarked and served as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry in the South African (Boer) War.

He returned to Australia at completion of his Boer War service and was discharged in 1901. On 19 Sep 1908 he married Bridget Isabel Cassidy and they settled at "Cregmore" via Dalby where their 3 children (a son and two daughters) were born. With the outbreak of WW1 he again enlisted on 21 Oct 1914 in the AIF. He was appointed as a Lieutenant in the 5th Light Horse Regiment embarking in Dec 1914 for service at Gallipoli.

On the night of 6 Jun 1915 he was leading a patrol to determine if renches were occupied by the enemy when engagement occured and he was wounded, presumed killed.
