Bill volunteered alongside his brothers Arthur, John, James, Reginald, Victor, Harry and his sister, Ellen May. They all returned home from war safely. Some served in the Middle East, Borneo, New Guinea and Arthur was taken prisoner of war on the Burma Railway.
Upon being discharged from the military, he returned to Carrathool to marry Betty Louise Moore on 24th of May, 1947. He and Betty would have 6 children Anne, Margaret, Marion, James, Robert, and Elizabeth Jayne.

In June 2024, William's (also fondly known as Bill) son Robert (Bob) walked a section of the Kokoda Trail in honour of his father. William's 3 grandchildren; Jodie (daughter of Anne), Leigh (son of James) and Jennifer (daughter of Marion) walked the entire Kokoda Trail in honour of their grandfather's service in the 2nd 33rd Battalion that faught valiantly in parts of the Kokoda Trail.
William leaves behind 15 grandchildren.
