Captain John Alexander Smyth Brazenor, a 38-year-old married Auctioneer from Ballarat, was appointed to the AIF on 30 August 1915 as the Officer Commanding 18 Coy AASC. Brazenor had joined the Victorian Mounted Rifles in 1897 and was commissioned into the 9th Australian Light Horse in 1903 and by 1909 was its Quartermaster. Post the Lord Kitchener Report in 1910 the Australian Army was reorganised on 1 July 1912 and on 1 July 1914 Brazenor found himself transferred to Officer Commanding the 18 Coy ASC (Militia) in Ballarat. With 18 Coy AASC he embarked in Melbourne on HMAT A41 Bakara on 8 November 1915. In Egypt Brazenor was transferred to 10 Coy AASC, the company that supported the headquarters of the newly raised 5th Division and promoted to Major. In 1918 Brazenor was for a time Acting CO of the 5th Divisional Train, was Mentioned in Dispatches, was awarded the DSO and while on leave in Italy fell dangerously ill. He recovered and embarked on the Troopship Thermistocles at Devonport, England, for RTA on 12 June 1919, disembarked in Melbourne in July and his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 30 September 1919.

Death of Major J. A .Brazenor
Major John Alexander Smyth Brazenor has died at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital after a long illness, aged 75. Major Brazenor served in World War I, first with the 9th Light Horse, as officer in charge of shipping horses to Egypt, and from November, 1915, until the armis tice, with the Army Service Corps in Egypt and France.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Victoria Decoration for his services in the first world war.
For some years prior to the 1914-18 war, Major Brazenor was secretary of the Ballarat Agricultural Society.
Major Brazenor was well-known in Masonic circles, and was a member of the Ballarat and United Masonic lodges, as well as being a prominent member of the R.S.L.
He leaves a wife, three sons and one daughter. The funeral will leave the premises of T. Bathurst and Sons, Glen Huntly Road, Elsternwick. at 11 a.m. on Monday for the Spring Vale Crematorium.
