Served during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.
50 years ago today, on the 9th February 1971, Private Samuel John Brokenshire, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-3116), labourer from Bishops Bridge, New South Wales and 18 Cleary Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. ANGLICAN 3-192. 50.
Born at Clarence Town, New South Wales on the 2nd July 1895 to William and Ada Ellen Brokenshire; husband of Alice Maud Brokenshire nee Taylor (married 1936, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1954), Sam enlisted July 1916 at Rutherford, N.S.W. (enlisted earlier)
Admitted to hospital at Cape Town, South Africa 28.12.1916 (mumps), 22.12.1917 (wound to right ankle), Sam returned home April 1919, being discharged on the 18th May 1919.
Mr Brokenshire’s name has been inscribed on the South Maitland Church of England Parish & District Roll of Honour and the Bishops Bridge Public School and District Honor Roll (photo, unveiled on the 14th July 1917, 20 names inscribed, 4 Fallen).
There is no indication inscribed on Samuel’s gravesite of his service for the 1st A.I.F., so I will place poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label to honour his sacrifice for God, King and Country.
Younger brother Henry (Harry) Wallace (born 1897, 56th Battalion, Reg No-3519, KIA 26.9.1917, Battle of Polygon Wood) fell during the war.
Older brother Percy William (born 1893, 4th Battalion, Reg No-4440, died 1948) not resting peacefully at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 3-177. 39.
