78 years ago today, on the Monday of the 4th February 1946, Private John Blackford, 7th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery (Reg No-1007), carpenter from Ben Boyd Road, Neutral Bay, New South Wales and 25 Winchester Street, Mayfield West, N.S.W., father of two (John and Milton), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. CATHOLIC 2-64. 81.
No funeral or obituary notice.
Born at Mandalong, New South Wales on the 14th November 1891 to James, died 16.7.1902, Wickham, N.S.W., age 50, buried at CATHOLIC 2-32. 60, no funeral or death notice, and Mary Ann Blackford nee Gorman, died 9.11.1948, Mayfield, N.S.W., age 89, sleeping at CATHOLIC 2-32. 60, of Lord Street, St Peters, New South Wales and Ida Street, Mayfield, N.S.W.; husband of Amelia Blackford nee Thompson (married 1923, Newtown, N.S.W., died?), John enlisted on the 11th April 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A14 Euripides on the 9th September 1916.
Granted leave to Paris from 14.1.1918 to 22.1.1918 and England from 12.10.1918 to 29.10.1918 and 29.3.1919 to 29.6.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 1.8.1919.
John arrived home on the 22nd September 1919, being discharged on the 7th November 1919.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Mr. Blackford’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies on John’s white marble headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
