Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Edward was the youngest of two children of James McCann Snr (born 1859 in Gympie, QLD) and Anne (Annie) Jordan (born 1868 in Kent, England). Annie arrived in Brisbane, QLD in 1888 on board the Mercara and she and James (a Miner) married in Gympie, QLD in 1889. In the early 1900s the family moved to Perth, WA where James was a Newsagent, Contractor and Caretaker.

Edward was a Fireman on the Railways in Melbourne, Victoria when he enlisted in the AIF in June 1918 - older brother Jim (Private; Service No:5756) was KiA at Villers-Brettoneux in France in 1917. Edward (Private; Service No:61444) was in London in 1919 when he requested a Discharge to work and to marry soldier's widow Helen Padwick. In his letter to the AIF in September 1919,  Edward stated 'I am respsonsible for a woman being in a certain condition'. However, Edward embarked for Fremantle on 15 November 1919 on board the Pyringa and was Discharged in January 1920.

Edward settled in Perth, WA and in 1922 married Annie Edith Buckley (born 1894 in Toodyay, WA) - Annie had been working as a Barmaid in Wagin, WA. Edward was a Labourer in Perth before he and Annie moved to Fremantle in 1930, where Edward was a Searcher and Watchman. In 1942, Edward and Annie were living in Perth, where Edward was working as a Linesman.

In April 1942 Edward enlisted in the ACMF, stating on his Attestation Papers that he had previous service in WWI - 1 year 118 days with the AIF and 4 years with the RAN.

Edward and Annie lived in Meekatharra, Perth and Fremantle - Edward worked as a Linesman, Shop Assistant and Civil Servant. He died in 1978 and Annie in 1985.
