"The sad news was received during the week by Rev. Father O'Connor, of Walcha, that Private Herb (Nugget) Cawley, of the 54th (late 18th Battalion), who had previously been reported as missing, was killed in action in France between the 20th and 22nd July. The deceased soldier was 23 years of age, and a son of Mrs. F. Riley, of Walcha. He left these shores about twelve months ago, and has a brother at the front." - from the Sydney Freeman's Journal 28 Sep 1916 (nla.gov.au)
