Bert served in France from September 1916. He was wounded in the head by shrapnel during the Battle of Hamel. He died from his wounds the same day in the 4th Australian Field Ambulance.
His older brother, 1780 Lce. Cpl. George Baker, 26th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Dernancourt 14 April 1918, aged 34. They were the sons of George and Jane Baker, of Mathinna, Tasmania.
Just after the war it was determined that the Mathinna State School had 126 former students who had gone to the war. Of these 18 had been killed, 61wounded; 17 wounded seriously and returned. The population of Mathinna today is roughly 140 people.
