Henry “Harry” Holmes was born at the family property, Sauchieburn at Ascot, 20 km north of Ballarat, in 1897. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Harry joined the Holmes family’s farming interests. He enlisted in Ballarat on 17 July 1915 as an 18-year-old single Farmer. As he lived in the country, he was not required to undertake Compulsory Military Training and therefore stated that he had “No Previous Service”.
