Henry “Harry” Holmes was born at the family property, Sauchieburn at Ascot, 20 km north of Ballarat, in 1897. He was the youngest of four children. After finishing his education at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, Harry joined the Holmes family’s farming interests. He enlisted in Ballarat on 17 July 1915 as an 18-year-old single Farmer. As he lived in the country, he was not required to undertake Compulsory Military Training and therefore stated that he had “No Previous Service”. Promoted to Lance Corporal Holmes three days before the war ended, Harry returned to Australia on 8 May 1919 on the Troopship Devenha, disembarked in Melbourne on 23 June was discharged on 15 August 1919 from the AIF at the Termination of his Period of Enlistment.
HOLMES. — On July 28, at Creswlck Hospital, Henry Smerdon Holmes, of "Launchley," Ascot, dearly loved husband of Edith, and loved father of Jack, Bill, David (deceased) and Elizabeth, aged 57 years. Requiescat in pace.
