Richard Bardney was born in 1896 in the city of Derby, England. He arrived in Australia during his childhood years and grew up in Cootamundra, New South Wales. Before enlistment, his occupation was a labourer. He was 20 years old, 8 months, and single when he enlisted.
Bardney enlisted with the AIF in the town of Cootamundra on the 14th October, 1916. He was placed in the 1st Battalion, 23rd Reinforcement. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales onboard the HMAT A24 Benalla on the 9th November, 1916.
After arriving in Europe, he was involved in many battles in Belgium and France, including being wounded in April 1918. In November 1918 he was convicted of desertion, although the sentence was suspended in 1919.
Bardney was repatriated to Australia on the 12th June, 1919.
