John's parents were Colin Campbell and Christina Shaw, of Petrie, North Coast Line. When he enlisted in January 1916 he was working as a ‘timber getter' at Petrie. After the war he lived with his sister and brother in law, James and Isabel Ferguson at North Pine. John died aged 38 as a result of a war injury, he never married. Two of John's brothers enlisted, Donald [Captain] and Thomas Allen [3337] who both returned home.
Petrie, Tuesday - The death occurred here of Mr. John Duncan Campbell, fourth son of the late Mr. Colin Campbell, at the age of 38 years. Mr. Campbell, who was a native of ths district, enlisted in Feburary, 1916, in the 42nd Battalion, and saw a considerable amount of active service, being mentioned for bravery. He was invalided home n October, 1919, but never recovered, being bed ridden for the last six years. The funeral took place at Lawnton.
