A tough soldier, Jack Barratt was wounded no less than four times in less than two years. The last wounds were mortal, he died after surviving for over a month in hospital.
Proceeded overseas to France, 4 December 1916;
Wounded in action, France, 11 April 1917; (shrapnel wound, right arm); rejoined unit, 14 May 1917.
2nd occasion Wounded in action, 18 July 1917 (gassed); rejoined unit, 22 September 1917.
3rd occasion Wounded in action, France, 3 April 1918; (gun shot wound, right forearm) transferred to England, 7 April 1918; rejoined unit, 16 August 1918.
4th occasion Wounded in action 20 September 1918; 20 September 1918 (shrapnel wound, thigh and head); died of wounds, 22 October 1918.
His older brother 778 Private Alfred Herbert Barratt 2nd Australian Pioneers AIF died of wounds 4th October 1917.
