Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

85 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 22nd October 1936, Private William Powell, 5th Australian Division Salvage Company (Reg No-520), wharf labourer from 121 Scott Street, Newcastle, New South Wales or Cowper Street, Carrington, New South Wales and Morisset Mental Hospital, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 45. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) I SW. 22.

Born at Glebe, New South Wales on the 20th December 1890 to John D and Elizabeth Powell, William enlisted July 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Wounded in action 20.7.1916 (GSW face, severe, Battle of Fromelles).

Admitted to hospital 30.11.1916 (trench feet), 15.10.1917 (not stated).

Mr. Powell’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 23rd February 1924, 258 names inscribed, 40 Fallen), Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and the Newcastle Wharf Labourers' Union Roll of Honor.

I located William resting in an unmarked grave, now long forgotten, so February 2021 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I submitted an application to DVA April 2021 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, but unfortunately, I am STILL waiting for a decision.

Lest We Forget.
