Wounded in action at Pozieres 28 July 1916, gun shot wound to the back and evacuated to England. He was bid ridden in Leeds hospital for over 15 weeks. One medical report has gunshot wound to spine, paraplegia. Bowe embarked for Australia with a shrapnel wound to the back 14 January 1917, and was discharged from the AIF during June 1917, with a pension of 3 pounds per fortnight. He died at the 4th Australian General Hospital at Randwick on the 26 April 1920. From his service record death was caused by acute cystitis and pyelitis, probably caused by the gunshot wound in 1916.
His oldest brother Matthew Bowe, a Lockhart publican received his medals. He had also served as 4985 Private Matthew Bowe 24th Battalion AIF, returned to Australia July 1919.
Another brother, 2583 Private Thomas Bowe 2nd Battalion AIF, was killed in action 7 November 1917, age 33.
