Initially rejected by the A.I.F. due to having poor teeth, William joined the Australian Remount Unit 1, Squadron 3 and embarked from Melbourne on board Transport A 47 Orsova on 12 November 1915. His war service record is brief and yields very few details. Throughout 1916 he was sent to hospital at Heliopolis on 3 occasions with scabies before rejoining his unit in June 1917. William served in the Middle East for the majority of the war. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 10 May 1919.
William embarked H.T. Burma at Suez for Australia on 20 July 1919 arriving home on 27 August and was discharged on 18 February 1920. He received his Victory medal, 1914/1915 Star and British War Medal between September 1920 and May 1922.
