Mick was the fourth of seven children of Alexander Cowan McKenzie (b1885 in Elmhurst, Victoria) and Ruby Rose Fairchild (b1891 in Timor, Victoria). Alexander - a Grocer - and Ruby married in 1912 in Ballarat, Victoria. They settled in Ararat and raised their family.
Mick was a Grocer in Ararat in 1940 when he enlisted in the ACMF, serving as a Corporal (Service No:V58348) with 8th Infantry Battalion in Darwin. In February 1943 he enlisted in the Australian Army (Service No:VX123431) and served with 8th Infantry Battalion in New Guinea (19 May 1944 to 10 August 1944) and SWPA - Emirau and Treasury Islands (27 September 1944 to 9 May 1946). Mick was a Warrant Officer II attached to 8th Infantry Battalion when he was Discharged in 1946. Brother Eldred (Lal/Alex) Alexander McKenzie (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:128562) also served in WWII.
Mick worked as a Grocer when he returned to Ararat where, in 1946 he married Olwyn Eva Smart (b1922 in Ararat, Victoria). Mick and Olwyn settled in Geelong where Mick was a Grocer and Manager. He died in 2002 and Olwyn in 2014.
