Before the War

John Boutcher Burnett was born in Bordertown SA to Mrs and Mr Burnett. He lived in a good-sized home on 48 George Street Norwood, South Australia. As a boy, he had a medium complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. He was Methodist he had a healthy body with no disabilities [2].

John Burnett (as he was known) was a tall man in his times- when the average height was 5 feet 8 or 160cm John stood out of the crowd at standing at a height of 6 foot 2 or 188cm and had a weight of 16Ibs [2]. John was a thirty-year-old married man with one kid, and he worked as a contractor. In the 1914 this job was a well-paying job [1]. John had had little to no military experience in the past but due to peer pressure, he enlisted his name in the First World War at the age of thirty in 1916[2].

During the War

After John enlisted in the A.I.F he was sent to Melbourne to train for his journey as part of the 9th Light Horse regiment. From Melbourne, John boarded the a58 Kainga in May 1916[3], with the 9th Light Horse regiment and reinforcement 17th. John arrived in Egypt (2)and from there John and the Light Horse regiment advanced and reached the Palestine frontier where they were involved in a fight to secure the Turkish outposts [1]. Whilst there John was promoted to a temporary sergeant on the 14/8/16. John remained in the 9th Light Horse regiment until May when he was taken on strength by the 15th Light Horse regiment on the 1/7/18. Whilst John was with the 15th light horse regiment he fell ill and didn’t return until the 23/7/162 when John returned he was reverted to the 9th Light Horse regiment.

From there He embarked for Damascus on the 19th of September 1918 [1]. John returned to Australia on the 26th of July 1919(1).

After the War

John came back from the war, He received two medals:  British war and Victory medal (2).

When John came back he lived with his wife. His death date was not recorded.

Anzac spirit

 John showed Anzac spirit by enlisting his name in the war to serve and help save his country. And earned his two medals.
