Died on this date – 3rd January…… Neil MacAulay was born at Little Hampton, Victoria in September, 1886. He married Alice Lyford in 1916 in Victoria.
Neil MacAulay enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 10th January, 1916 as a 29 year old, married, Grocer from Collie, Western Australia.
Gunner Neil MacAulay embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 4th May, 1916 with the 25th Howitzer Brigade, 2nd Reinforcements.
He joined Artillery Training Depot at Tel-el-Kebir (no date recorded) then embarked from Alexandria on 1st August, 1916 on Lake Manitoba to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force).
On 25th September, 1916 Gunner MacAulay was taken on strength of No. 1 Command Depot at Perham Downs, Wiltshire, England & was classified as B1A (temporarily unfit for Active Service).
The Hospital Admissions form recorded Gunner MacAulay was posted to No. 4 Command Depot on 28th October, 1916 with his “Arm hurt by horse and pneumonia.” He was medically classified on 12th November & 24th November, 1916 as B1 A3 (fit for Overseas Training Camp in 2 – 3 weeks). Gunner MacAulay was medically classified on 1st December, 1916 as B1 A4 (fit for Overseas Training Camp when passed dentally fit.)
He was marched out to No. 7 Camp in England on 24th December, 1916 from Infantry Draft Depot at Perham Downs.
On 8th January, 1917 Gunner MacAulay proceeded overseas to France via Folkestone on Princess Henrietta from 3rd Divisional Artillery Details. He was marched into A.G.B.D. (Australian General Base Depot) at Etaples, France on 9th January, 1917.
He was transferred to 3rd Divisional Artillery on 8th February, 1917 & was taken on strength of 7th Field Artillery Brigade – 27th Battery in the Field on the same day.
Gunner Neil MacAulay was mustered as Driver with 7th Field Artillery Brigade on 18th May, 1917.
On 28th November, 1917 Driver MacAulay was admitted to 9th Australian Field Ambulance with Trench Fever. He was transferred & admitted to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station on 29th November, 1917 then transferred to Ambulance Train 34 on 2nd December, 1917. Driver MacAulay was admitted to 35th General Hospital at Calais, France on 2nd December, 1917 with Nephritis.
He was transferred to England on 7th December, 1917 & was admitted to Auxiliary Military Hospital, Southall, England (affiliated to Edmonton Military Hospital) on 7th December, 1917 with Nephritis. The Hospital Admissions form recorded “Great deal of albumen present on admission. Uraemic fits started Jan 1st.”
Driver Neil MacAulay died at 7 am on 3rd January, 1918 Southall V.A.D. Hospital, Southall, England from 1. Acute Nephritis & 2. Uraemia. The Hospital Admissions form recorded “died Jan 3rd 18 in a fit.”
He was buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England where around 360 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
