"...2932 Private Walter Cottingham, 7th Battalion from Clifton Hill, Victoria. A 25 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 12 July 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 10 September 1915 aboard HMAT Star of Victoria. After serving briefly at Gallipoli, he deployed in March 1916 to France where he transferred to the 2nd Brigade Trench Mortar Battery in April and was promoted to Corporal in September 1916. He was wounded in action on 15 October 1916 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. After recovering, he rejoined his unit in France on 5 April 1917 and was wounded in action again on 21 September 1917. He received medical treatment in France and returned to his unit only to be wounded in action a third time on 27 March 1918. He was evacuated to England for medical treatment and returned to his unit in France on 12 June 1918. Shortly thereafter, he was accidentally injured on 24 July 1918 and again evacuated to England for treatment. This time he was returned to Australia, arriving on 5 January 1919 and was discharged from the AIF. Pte Cottingham went on to serve again in the Second World War from 3 August 1940 until 19 October 1945 working as a cook at the POW Camp at Tatura, Victoria and with the 17th Garrison Battalion at Murchison, Victoria..." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
