OBITUARY
The death occurred at his home at Warrawee, of Lieut.-Col. Hugh Venables Vernon, former State president of the Returned Soldiers1 League. He was 58 years of age. After a short illness, the death took place at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Young, on Tuesday of Mr. Thos. Cullen (72). His family comprises: Lawrence and Kenneth (Bribbaroe), Patrick (Ungarie), Leo (Sydney), Raymond (Young), Mrs. E. Stapleton (Maroubra), and Mrs. D. Maher (Young).

LATE H. V. VERNON Was R.S.L. President Lleut.-Colonel Hugh Venables Vernon, a former State president of the Returned Soldiers' League, died yeserday at his home at Warrawee, aged 58. A native of Hastings, England, Mr. Vernon came to Australia at an early age. He was an architect. He Joined the old N.S.W. Lancers at Parramatta, of which his father, the late Mr. w. L. Vernon, was colonel, and he was one of five men chosen to represent the N.S.W. Lancer Contingent at the Queen Victoria Jubilee celebrations In London, nearly 40 years ago. From there he went to the South African war and fought throughout In 1914 he enlisted in the Artillery and served at Galllpoli and France. He was promoted to lientenant-colonel and awarded the D.S.O.
Returning to Australia, he took a keen interest in the welfare of Diggers. Mrs. Vernon and a grown-up family survive.

Representatives of soldiers' organisations and famous regiments, ana many prominent public and professional men attended the funeral of Colonel Hugh Venables Vernon yesterday afternoon A service at St Thomas' Church, North Sydney was conducted by the Rev F H Hordern Archdeacon S M Johnstone in an address spoke of the war services and public work of the deceased The cortege proceeded to Gore Hill Cemetery, where the remains were laid to lest alongside his fathers grave. In a sympathetic address Mr Lee Pulling of the Sydney Church of England Grammar School said they were paying tribute to one who had been a gallant soldier a distinguished citizen and a good man The watchword of his father, who was also a distinguished soldier was service and duty with honour and the son, whom they were now mourning followed his worthy example His was a life spent in service for others The chief mourneis weie Mrs Vernon (widow ) Miss M V Vernon (daughter) Messrs P V. Vernon and C W V Vernon (sons ) Mrs J H Dobbin (sister) J V Dobbin (nephew) and Miss L A Pulling.
